We plan to hold our NC State Open separate this year and have the Virginia Open & District 4 in September. We have a block of 10+ rooms reserved under "NC Checkers" - Group rate of $84.00 + tax = $94.00 for a king or double bed, non-smoking, available May 18th through 20th; however, most players will book the 18th & 19th. Same venue we have used in the past several years, and our contact person is Laurie Stafford. You must let the desk receptionist know you are a "checker player" to get group discount and make your reservation by phone (336-434-4797), don't use the internet to book your room. Please reserve your room early since you may cancel anytime prior to check-in until 4:00 PM on the date of your arrival without charge or penalty. We have an adequate conference room on the 19th & 20th for free provided we rent 10 rooms; otherwise. we pay $72.80 per day for our playing room. We have the usual complimentary continual breakfast but there are some good places to eat breakfast and lunch close by, “see above."  Get directions by: “click map above"  Registration begins at 8:00 AM and NC Business Meeting: 8:30 - 9:00 AM, Tournament Starts at 9:00 AM.

  • Congratulations! To GM Alex Moiseyev from Dublin, Ohio, our tournament winner and MS Tim Laverty from Graham, NC, as our 2023 North Carolina State Champion and MS Dr. John Webster from Stoneville, NC as third place Master and MS Teal Stanley from Greensboro, NC as fourth place Master.
  • Congratulations! To JR Smith from Greensboro, NC as our 2023 North Carolina State Majors Champion. Smith was selected by our mid-range  Rules  when only a single group tournament is played. 2023 North Carolina State Open Finish Positions.  We bracketed Fuquay, McDaniel, Pierce, Buck Smith, and JR Smith as b class so we could award a NC State Open Major player a trophy and recognition. 
  • The tournament was 7 rounds of Swiss with 12 players in a single group of Masters and Majors players with a repairing in the last round.
  • All players paid a $25 entry fee except NC Life Memberships (John & Jeff Webster, Teal Stanley, Tim Laverty, Joe McDaniel, Glenn Fuquay) although Joe, John, Glenn paid an entry fee for a total of $200.
  • The $1,306.00 prize fund was a combination of North Carolina Trust Funds, contributions, and entry fees.
  • We appreciate Joe McDaniel & David Sears supporting our tournaments. Joe McDaniel genially, and generously contributed $1,000.00 to our prize fund.
  • We experienced a welcoming surprise this tournament with Joe and Jeannie McDaniel attending our North Carolina State Open!
  • Dave Beachy contributed $100 for our Saturday pizza lunch which all players appreciated this delightful treat.
  • Joe and Jeannie invited a group of players to a buffet dinner at Pioneer Family Restaurant Friday evening. A wonderful meal and fellow was enjoyed by all who attended.
  • Oldest checker player was Buck Smith from Millboro, Virginia - age 92 on March 16, 2023.
  • We appreciate Jeannie, Quinton, and Buck for helping clean and set up our playing room.
  • We offer a big Thank You to all who help make this tournament a success, especially Gayle, our score-keeper and referee.
